What Hygiene Measures Should Independent Retailers Implement in Store?

COVID-19

Adopting stringent measures in your store when it comes to hygiene can help to protect you, your staff and your customers from Covid-19 and limit the chances of spreading the virus.

As an independent retailer, taking responsibility for this may feel overwhelming. However, we have put together some top tips on things you can do based on what other retailers are doing across the country.

1. Provide all of your staff with disposable gloves and masks.

2. Avoid touching your face and keep your hands clean to minimise the spread of germs.

3. Encourage staff to step away from the shop floor at regular intervals to wash their hands for 20 seconds using soap and water.

4. Provide a handwashing/sanitiser station for customers near the store entrance.

5. Regularly wipe down and clean hard surfaces, screens and door handles.

6. If it is possible, install a protective plastic screen on the till counter.

7. Limit the number of customers entering the store during busy periods to ensure that the social distancing rule of 2 metres apart is adhered to.

8. Use tape to mark out 2 metres on the shop floor, particularly near the queuing area.

The Association of Convenience Stores (ACS) has provided retailers with a customer notice for their queuing areas and tills to remind customers to follow the 2-metre rule.
