Using Chip & PIN technology, customers can insert their credit or debit card into the card payment reader when they are ready to pay, and simply enter their 4-digit PIN code that their bank will have provided them. This PIN verifies that the transaction is secure and the funds will then be sent to the businesses merchant account. Here, the transaction will be authorised and processed before the funds are transferred to the business bank account.

Chip and PIN solutions are a way of making payment using a credit card or debit card. Originally introduced to the UK in 2006, it replaced the magnetic swipe method which was considered a much slower and less secure method of payment.
Prior the Chip & PIN, customers would need to physically sign to confirm each payment made which meant if the customer lost their card, this could be used for fraudulent payments.
Chip and PIN technology was designed to make card transaction more secure and give customers a faster and safer way to process their card payments.
With Chip and PIN, when a customer is ready to make a payment, they simply insert their credit and debit into the card reader. To verify the transaction, the customer will need to insert their 4-digit PIN code.
This PIN is matched to the code stored on the chip of the card to secure the transaction. Once verified, the card machine will send the encrypted transaction data to your merchant account for the transaction to be processed.
Once the customers details have been checked and confirmed that they have enough money in their account, the payment will be sent from the customers bank into your business bank account which could take up to 3-5 days.

This service is only available to customers who have Barclaycard as an acquirer. Ecommerce pay pages, pay by link and virtual terminals are currently settled the day after the next banking day.
